Cheese-puffs for the day after tomorrow

I was going to skip this assignment, because I couldn’t find any people in my life that I thought should make a project together that I hadn’t already introduced to each other. But then, out of the blue, it wasn’t me who got to be the “introducer”. I realized that pinterest had already introduced me to a new friend and made us do a project together! When I pinned “The Wartime Cookbook” to my “History”-board someone I’d never met on the other side of the world commented that she wanted to try one of the recipes. That sounded like fun and I answered that I would do it to. 

“Cheese puffs

6 slices of bread
2 tablespoons butter
½ cup grated cheese
1/3 teaspoon baking powder
1/3 teaspoon salt
1 egg, separated
Cut 2-inch rounds from bread and toast lightly on one side. Spread butter on untoasted side. Mix cheese, baking powder, salt, and beaten egg yolk; fold in stiffly beaten egg white. Spread thickly over buttered side of bread and place close together on cookie sheet. Place under pre-heated broiler until puffed and light brown.”

Through this project we got talking and found a lot of common ground that we would have had to live without otherwise. I am truly grateful for this new person in my life who makes me see things from a new but familiar perspective and makes my own thought flow so much easier! And the cheese-puffs where also quite tasty! (Even though we both decided to not cut our bread in circles, to avoid waste.)

We made some Pinterest! 

As a continuation of the cooperation from the “Encounters/Encuentros”-assignment and as an acknowledgement of the fact that we got to know each other on Pinterest, marie8ml8 and I decided to send each other some pictures to pin to our home boards. We used a phone-app that lets you send physical postcards with your own photos and decided that each postcard should be a reaction the the previous one, like a chain of association, and that we could only write one sentence at the back (since text is of minor importance in the Pinterest world). The result of this pinning you can see at the top, a conversation that starts with a christmas tree decoration in the shape of a kakapo (a bird from New Zealand) and ends with a guardian-owl and his pet mouse. My favourite part of the conversation is when my typical summer excursion gets turned into a perfect replica out of lego bricks! (Which then turns into the retelling of a ghost encounter in an old doll house.)

My Secret Sister-in-Law Sarah hosts a wonderful InterThing called the Art Assignment.  AA recently posted an interview of the Guerrilla Girls by Stephen Colbert in which they showed an early example of their provocative art posters regarding the lack of women artists in major museums.  The tag line says: “Do women have to be naked to get into the Met. Museum?

I thought I’d see how the works of art hanging around the house stacked up to 1986 Met’s Guerrilla Girl Rating of 5% (5% of the modern art at the Met was by women, 85% of the nudes were of women).

I am happy to report that 85% of the art in the Namlhots Collection is by women*. 

I think Stephen Colbert is correct when he says that Art speaks for itself.  It’s nice to hear women’s voices in the chorus.

The Art Assignment: Become Someone Else, by Tameka Norris

This assignment was to use a transitional object to become someone else.

The object in my case is a sentence I’ve heard almost every day my entire life. Every time I hear it, it slightly shifts who I am and traps me inside a set module of being.

The sentence is “You’re exactly like your mother!”, always said as a compliment and always said appreciatively, as a good thing. And it is. I love my mother, she is one of the best people I know. Witch makes it hard to explain why that sentence works as the slamming of a jail door every time I hear it. Maybe it has something to do with us being brought up as individuals these days, learning to value our individuality above everything , or maybe it is the feeling of being invisible since it is her they see, not me.

In any case, that sentence takes something away from me. It defines me by her limits. I get framed by her experiences, her relationships, her goals and victories. Her history gets written over mine.

That sentence makes me a mirror, not a person. Hers are the colours I’m painted with. Going against her character is painting outside the lines, and I never knew how to do that.

So I go through life wondering: am I a clone or an upgrade? Or just a shadow of a more perfect idea?

This one hits very close to home for me. I’ve heard this very thing since I was wee, and I’ve started to hear it all the time about me and my own little daughter as well. It’s the mantle we all deal with, I think, understanding who our parents are and how we are at the same time of them and not of them. Excellent contribution, as per usual, minnesbeta.

Thank you Sarah :) I think you are right. My cousin said something interesting the other day when we visited our grandmother’s grave. We weren’t at all talking about this, but she mentioned that our grandmother must have very “strong DNA” because everyone in the family looks like her. That made me think that maybe I’m not “exactly like my mother”, maybe we are both like my grandmother. Somehow her comment made the situation more about heritage and less about the need to be unique and it made me feel a very warm connection to my history.

Such a beautiful way to measure one’s own history, focusing on maps of the places you’ve lived. I especially appreciate the change in scale to assign different values or weights to each place. Nice!

Make a Thing

I wasn’t sure what to do at first for @theartassignment‘s Make a Thing. But then I remembered that one of the first things I would do when I got my first laptop was to edit photos with filters and put quotes over it. Hipster photos before they were called such. Here’s the photo I made to then create the cross stitch pattern for the real life version:

This is magnificent. The longer this series goes on, the more I am glad that there are no deadlines, as is exemplified by this response. Sometimes you need to ruminate on an idea for a while before the best response comes to you. Also love the small dimensions here, as scale is so adaptable when it comes to digital imagery. I like that this is kept minuscule and delicate.
